Robbery suspects caught as police fire shots

NORTHWOOD, Iowa &045; Several shots were fired and two people who had allegedly robbed a Food and Fuel convenience store near Hanlontown, Iowa, on Tuesday afternoon were arrested near the Top of Iowa Rest Stop exit on I-35, according to the Worth County Sheriff’s Office in Northwood.

The sheriff’s office report said a 9-1-1 telephone call at 4 p.m. Tuesday reported that an armed robbery had taken place at the Food and Fuel convenience store near the Iowa Highway 9 exit off I-35.

About ten minutes later, a Worth County Sheriff’s Deputy spotted the suspect vehicle near the Iowa Highway 105 junction on I-35. The report said the deputy stopped the vehicle and attempted to apprehend the suspects, at which time the suspects were uncooperative and resistive. The police fired at the suspects and after a brief pursuit the vehicle was disabled. The deputy and other officers took the suspects into custody. A Worth County Sheriff’s Office representative could not confirm whether the suspects fired at police.

Elmer Keith Taylor, 42, of Milwaukee, Wis., will be charged with first-degree robbery and felon in possession of a firearm, the report said. Anna Marie Wright, 25, also of Milwaukee, was charged with first-degree robbery.

Assisting the Worth County Sheriff’s Office was the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, Northwood Police Department, Lake Mills Police Department, Forest City Police Department, Iowa State Patrol, Department of Narcotics Enforcement and the Department of Criminal Investigation.

This incident remains under investigation.
