Robert H. Schiager, 80, Albert Lea

Funeral services for Robert H. Schiager were held Tuesday 10:30 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church. The Rev. John Henriksen

officiated. Interment was in Graceland Cemetery. Visitation was 4-7 p.m. Monday at Bonnerup Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Military honors were accorded by the Albert Lea Veterans.

Bob died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at St. John’s, where he had been a resident since February 2002.

Bob was born May 29, 1922 in Albert Lea to Goodwin and Gladys (Hoverson) Schiager. He was a graduate of Albert Lea High School in 1940. Relatives and friends got together with him in June to honor his 80th birthday in the Chapel at St. John’s.

Bob enlisted in the infantry branch of the service in October 1942; and received an honorable discharge October of 1945, attaining the rank of T5 Corporal.

Bob was united in marriage July 3, 1948, to Mildred Lunning Swanson in Albert Lea. They made their home in Albert Lea and Emmons. Bob was a finishing carpenter until he was seriously injured in an auto accident in October 1958, for which he spent five months in the hospitals. After his partial recovery, he became the manager of the Emmons Municipal Liquor store. Following that he became a maintenance worker at the local Eagles Club for 19 years, retiring in 1986. He also sharpened saws for many years. Bob was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, the Eagles, American Legion and the VFW. He received the honor of being Eagle of The Year in 1986.

He liked to watch the NASCAR races and the Twins on television. Bob was also an avid bike rider until his health prevented it, over the years he did ride a bike trail in Wisconsin many times. He had always loved being outdoors and making the trip to Wisconsin for the fall colors. He also spent many enjoyable hours reading.

Bob is survived by his daughter, Pat (Donavon) Johnson; granddaughter, Debbie Johnson and friend Lyndon Johnson of Albert Lea; sisters: Shirley (Ray) Beck of Albert Lea, Beverly Rasmussen of Freeborn, and Gretchen (Wayne) Hanson of Hollandale; sisters-in-law: Elizabeth Lunning of Clarks Grove, Adelia (Rollin) Harrison of Albert Lea, Marian Traverso and Claude of Richmond Calif., Sharon and John Grass of Le Roy, Kenneth and Lorraine Lunning of Wisconsin, and Waunita and husband Marvin Brindal of Albert Lea; and nieces and nephews.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Millie, in 1977; his sister and brother-in-law, Cleo and Clair Mansager of Hollandale; brother-in-law, Maynard Rasmussen of Freeborn; brothers-in-law: Mervin, Clayton, Raymond, Luverne, Donald and Norman Lunning; sister-in-law: Arlene Shelson of Albert Lea; and his parents-in-law.

Bob was a very caring and kind person and will be missed by all who knew him.
