Selma A. Bakken, 92, Albert Lea

Funeral services for Selma A. Bakken, age 92, of Albert Lea will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at Central Freeborn Lutheran Church. The Rev. Linda Gunderson will officiate. Interment will be in Central Freeborn Cemetery. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the services at the church.

Selma died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.

Selma Anna Bakken was born March 25, 1910, to Robert and Louise (Barendt) Deno in Le Sueur, Minn. She came to Ellendale at age 11 and moved to the Albert Lea area at age 18. On March 12, 1932, Selma was united in marriage to Henry Bakken at the Central Freeborn Lutheran Parsonage. She worked at Sundbird Nursing Home while living in Cambridge from 1963 – 1967, worked at Conner’s Rest Home for two years, did Home Health a short time, and then worked at Good Samaritan Center for 12 1/2 years until her retirement. Selma enjoyed making quilts, embroidery, baking, cooking, and especially spending time with her family.

Survivors include her husband, Henry; son, Donald Bakken and his wife Carsie; daughter, Jeanette Groskreutz and her husband Roger; daughter-in-law, Eunice Bakken; grandchildren: Tim and Lisa Bakken, Cynthia and Lonnie Otterson, Shari and Roger Manges, DeeAnn and Mike lovanelli, Chad Groskreutz, and Layne and Charity Groskreutz; step grandchildren: Carisa Riles, Donald, Darrell, Dwayne and Christine Twitty, and Mark and Terry Williamson; 13 great-grandchildren; foster brothers: Omar, Chester and John Dahl; foster sister, Margaret Mouw; step brother, Burnell and his wife Rosemary Deno; sisters-in-law: Babe (Arlene) Stadheim and her husband Stanley, and Myrtle Peterson; and many nieces and nephews.

Selma was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Harold Bakken; her foster parents, Carl and Hilda Dahl; three sisters: Freida, Cecelia and Elsie Mae in infancy; step sister, Arvilla; foster brother, Arthur Dahl; foster sister, Martha Nelson; and sisters- and brothers-in-law: Elmer Bakken, Orfa Harpedahl, Howard Bakken, Violet Hareid, Genevieve Miller and Junior Bakken.
