Swimmers dominate Mankato East

Last week, Albert Lea High School girls’ swimming and diving coach Lachelle Sandon said she was confident of a victory in the Tigers’ next home meet.

They showed us why Tuesday.

The young Tigers dominated Mankato East 100-84 in the ALHS pool. Albert Lea did not count its points in the final event after building a 100-72 lead.

The highlights for the Tigers were a pair of 1-2-3 finishes, in the 100-yard backstroke and 100 breaststroke. Kaeli Wayne won the back in 1:11.06, followed by Amy Leach and Alyssa Nelson. Leah Matheson took the breast in 1:15.01, with Krista Horejsi second and Mariah McGill third.

Rachael Hagen had what Sandon called &uot;an unbelievable race&uot; while winning the 500 freestyle in 6:08.19.

Samantha Cole swept the sprints, winning the 50 free in 26.8 seconds and the 100 free in 59.27.

Chelsea Cole won the 100 butterfly in 1:08.67.

Leach, Horejsi, Nelson and Lonna Vanderploeg were first in the 200 medley relay. Chelsea Cole, Brooke Kaasa, Wayne and Samantha Cole had the fastest time in the 400 free relay.

Other ALHS places: Chelsea Cole, second, 200 free; Hagen, third, 200 free; Brittney Kaasa, fifth, 200 free and fourth, 500 free; Leach, third, 200 IM; Matheson, fourth, 200 IM; Jill Wilkie, fifth, 200 IM; Brooke Kaasa, third, 50 free and third, 100 free; Wayne, fourth, 50 free; Kassi Gaul, second, diving; Rachel Foster, fifth, diving; Nelson, second, 100 butterfly; Emily Wirkus, fifth, 500 free.

The Albert Lea junior varsity won 97-66 with firsts by Wirkus, 200 free; Horejsi, 50 free; Heather Carlson, 100 butterfly; Whitney Walters, 100 free; Jackie Elwood, 100 back; and Megan Austin, 100 breast.

The Tigers, 3-4 in dual meets, are off until Saturday’s Austin Invitational.
