ALHS swimmers sink Winona, 95-91

A 1-2 finish in the 200-yard medley set the tone early for the Albert Lea girls’ swimming and diving team, which led from start to finish in a 95-91 victory over Winona Tuesday night.

&uot;We had personal bests all around &045; great swims,&uot; said coach LaChelle Sandon. &uot;It was probably one of our best meets of the year.&uot;

Kaeli Wayne, Leah Matheson, Sam Cole and Brooke Kaasa combined to win the medley, the meet’s first event, and the Tigers went in to win four more events.

Sam Cole, a seventh-grader, won the 50 and 100 freestyle, her sister Chelsea Cole took the 100 butterfly, and Wayne won the 100 backstroke.

Chelsea Cole, Wayne, Brooke Kaasa and Sam Cole secured the victory with a second-place finish in the 400 free relay.

Ali Schmitz, Carly Schmitz, Heather Carlson and Heidi VanErkel were second in the medley relay.

Other Albert Lea places: Rachael Hagen, second, 200 free and second, 500 free; Brittney Kaasa, fourth, 200 free and fourth, 500 free; Emily Wirkus, fourth, 200 free; Matheson, third, 200 IM and second, 100 breast; Wayne, fourth, 200 IM; Jill Wilkie, fifth, 200 IM; Brooke Kaasa, third, 50 free and third, 100 free; Lonna Vanderploeg, second, 50 free and fourth, 100 free; Kassi Gaul, second, diving; Rachel Foster, fifth, diving; Alyssa Nelson, fourth, 100 butterfly and fourth, 100 back; Chelsea Cole, second, 100 back; Krista Horejsi, fourth, 100 breast; Mariah McGill, fifth, 100 breast.

The Albert Lea junior varsity won 101-79. Firsts were by Brianna Gold, 200 IM; Whitney Walters, 50 free and 100 free; Jackie Elwood, 100 butterfly and 100 back.

The Tigers host Rochester Century next Tuesday.
