Belshan’s opponent says he doesn’t want the job

Dave Hutchins, who had announced he would run for second-district county commissioner, said Wednesday that he has withdrawn his candidacy, meaning incumbent commissioner Dan Belshan of Glenville now faces no opponent.

Hutchins, service manager at the Motor Inn Company in Albert Lea, said he found it would be difficult to have his job and be a commissioner at the same time. He made his decision before the September primary, he said.

His name will still appear on the ballot because he didn’t officially withdraw his candidacy soon enough.

Belshan said he will continue to campaign as though he has an opponent.

The race for the commissioner seats remains in the fourth district, where former county administrator Truman Thrond is challenging incumbent board chair Dave Mullenbach.
