Bulldogs get elusive first win

LAKE MILLS, Iowa &045; A week earlier, when his team lost a tough 15-8 ballgame to Fort Dodge St. Edmund, Lake Mills football coach Bill Byrnes said his team played well enough to win for the first time this year.

On Friday, the Bulldogs did.

Keith Hebrink scored a pair of first-half touchdowns and the Bulldogs held off visiting North Iowa 15-14 on senior night at Lake Mills.

The Bulldogs improved to 1-5 in Class 1A District 2 and 1-7 overall while North Iowa fell to 1-5 and 2-6.

Hebrink put the home team on the scoreboard with a 5-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, and Tom Pritchard kicked the PAT.

North Iowa took the lead in the second quarter, breaking a 44-yard run and rushing for the two-point conversion.

The Bulldogs answered with a 27-yard touchdown pass from Brad Rogstad to Hebrink. Rogstad passed to Dan Helgeson for what turned out to be the deciding points.

Rogstad finished 7-for-11 for 86 yards, with Hebrink catching three passes for 43. Justin Kester led the Bulldogs in rushing with 67 yards on 12 carries.

Lake Mills outgained North Iowa 273-122.

The Bulldogs finish the season this Friday at Southeast Webster.
