She lived with her family on the farm until her marriage to William G. Flanagan on Aug. 30, 1933. They lived their entire life in Albert Lea. She was a homemaker. They raised three children, and were lifetime members of Trinity Lutheran Church of Albert Lea. She had been a member of the Eastern Star in her early married life, but dropped her membership at some point.

Fern loved the outdoors, and always had a large garden from which she did a great deal of canning for many years, and also had many flower patches. When her children were young, being an accomplished seamstress, she made most of their clothing. In later years she did a lot of crocheting and made afghans for all of her children and grandchildren.
