Spikers win one of three

MASON CITY, Iowa &045; It took a while for the Albert Lea High School volleyball team to adjust to &uot;rally&uot; scoring at Saturday’s Mason City Invitational.

One thing the Tigers figured out: It makes it tough to rally.

The ALHS girls played well but dropped two of three matches and did not advance out of pool play.

With the rally scoring, teams play two games to 21 points.

&uot;It was an adjustment for us,&uot; said Tigers coach Gina Eppen. &uot;It is tough to fight back from a deficit in rally.&uot;

The Tigers lost 2-0 to Mason City in the opening round, falling 21-15 in both games. They also dropped a pair of 21-15 games to Decorah in the second round.

Albert Lea defeated St. Ansgar 2-0, winning 21-16 and 21-17.

&uot;We got ahead against St. Ansgar and finally got over 15 points,&uot; said Eppen. &uot;We played strong to finish the day and add another win to our record.&uot;

The Tigers’ individual leaders for the day: Amber Edwards eight kills, four blocks, three blocks, two aces; Emily Thompson one kill, one block; Ashley Chrz three kills, two blocks, three digs, one ace, nine assists; Christina Berggren five kills, two digs; Leah Boyer one kill, one block, 18 assists, three digs; Krista Johnson two kills; Jenny Hovendick six aces, six digs; Whitney Sorenson 11 kills, five blocks, one ace, four digs; Dara Cunningham one kill, one ace; Danielle Rankin four kills, five aces.

The Tigers, 3-17 overall, host Rochester Century in a Big Nine match Tuesday.
