Walter R. Wangsness, 83, Clarks Grove

Funeral services for Walter R. Wangsness, age 83, of Clarks Grove, will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002 at the Hartland Evangelical Lutheran Church. The Rev. Dennis Schmidt will officiate. Interment will be in the Hartland Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by area servicemen’s organizations. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m., Monday, Oct. 28, 2002 at the Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.

Walter died on Friday, Oct. 25, 2002 at the Albert Lea Good Samaritan Center.

Walter Rubin Wangsness was born on Aug. 20, 1919 in Worth County, Iowa, the son of Henry and Julia (Sorbo) Wangsness. He was baptized and confirmed at the Emmons Lutheran Church. After serving four years in the United States Army during WWII, he attended four years of ag school on the GI Bill. On April 7, 1946 Walter was united in marriage to Alpha Harum in Hartland. Walt farmed outside of Clarks Grove until his retirement in 1982. He was a member of the Hartland Evangelical Lutheran Church where he served as a church trustee for years. He was also a member of the American Legion and the VFW. Walt enjoyed fishing, bowling, pitching horseshoes, taking care of his lawn and the time he spent with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Alpha, of Clarks Grove, son Wayne and his wife Roni Van Zuilen-Wangsness of Madison Lake, Minn.; grandson Eryk and his wife Sarah Fallinson-Wangsness and their daughter Jade all of Mankato, and granddaughter Heather Wangsness of Boulder Colo.

Walt was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Etta Anderson, Gilma Johnson and Bernice Larson; brothers Otto, Elton, Clarence, George and Herman.
