Reed gets mayoral nod in Hartland

An election without a candidate for the Hartland mayor resulted in another four years for interim mayor Kyle Reed.

Former mayor Laura Frederick resigned her position along with City Councilor Roger Solberg and City Clerk Joanne Phillips, protesting the way the firemen’s association fund is handled by the firefighters.

Kyle Reed was appointed mayor, but did not run for the November election.

The write-in election chose Reed by 75 votes out of 177. Ray Mielke, who ran for the city council, was the second place with 24 votes. Twenty-four people received votes in the unusual election.

One city councilor post also did not have any candidate.

Voters chose interim councilor Greg Recknor by 48 votes, but Recknor did not accept the position. Forty-seven names were written for that post.

City Clerk Penny Bell said the position will remain vacant for three months, as mandated by state law. And then, the city council can fill the vacancy by appointing someone.
