Valborg E. Smith, age 94, formerly of Albert Lea, died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, in Crossville, Tenn. Memorial services will be held in Albert Lea at a later date. Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home is assisting with the arrangements.
Valborg Elizabeth Smith was born Aug. 30, 1908, to Carl and Maren (Ravn) Mathiason in Alden. She attended school in Alden and graduated from Alden High School in 1926 and from Luther Academy in Albert Lea in 1927. Val worked as a secretary in Albert Lea until 1929 when she moved to Troy, N.Y. On March 2, 1935, she was united in marriage to Andrew J. Smith in Troy. Val was secretary to the business manager of the Lansingburgh Central School District for several years. She was active in the Leonard Hospital Auxiliary, the Lansingburgh Boys’ Club Auxiliary, the Red Cross blood program, and the Danish Lutheran Church in Lansingburgh. After retiring, Andy and Val moved to Albert Lea in 1971 and joined Trinity Lutheran Church. Val was very active in the church and the circles and Bible study. She was also a volunteer in the Meals-On-The-Go program and the Red Cross.
Survivors include her sons: Andrew and his wife, Doris of Fairfield Glade, Tenn., and Ronald and his wife, June of Shrewsbury, Pa.; grandchildren: Karl Smith, Valerie Smith, Danielle Hale, Christopher Smith and his wife Nicole, Ward Smith, and Andrew Smith; and several great-grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters: Betty Brandt of Tyler, Hilda Duncan and her husband, Elvis of Alden, and Dagmar Jacobson and her husband, Allan of Rice Lake, Wis.; brother Anker Mathiason and his wife, Ardis of Alden; sister-in-law Stella Mathiason of Alden; and many nieces and nephews.
Val was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Andy; grandson, Kenneth Smith; sister, Astrid Mathiason; and brother, Arnold Mathiason.
