Weekend Planner: Holiday fun, doughnuts highlight weekend

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts are back.

Due to the immense popularity of last month’s fund-raiser, the Albert Lea High School Choir and Orchestra will again sell 500 dozen Krispy Kreme Doughnuts beginning at 7 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, in the parking lot of the Lakeside Cafe/Ben’s Floral and Frame Designs. The doughnuts are $7 per dozen. They will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis.

ALHS Choral Director Diane Heaney said during last month’s fund-raiser, the doughnuts were all sold within 90 minutes.

Following is a roundup of other events happening in the area this weekend.

Friday, Dec. 6

– The Albert Lea Art Center’s Festival of Trees continues from noon-4 p.m. There are 20 trees decorated with varying themes. Admission is free, but donations are accepted to help defray art center expenses.

– Crossroads Evangelical Free Church will present the dramatic musical &uot;Four Tickets To Christmas&uot; at the Albert Lea Civic Theatre at 7 p.m. There is no charge for admission, but a freewill offering will be received to benefit the Salvation Army Food Shelf.

Tickets may be reserved by calling 377-8526. There is guaranteed seating for those with tickets until 15 minutes before performance time. Any remaining seats will be opened up to the public at that time.

Saturday, Dec. 7

– Hayward Lutheran Church will hold its annual Christmas cookie bake sale from 8 a.m.-noon. Coffee, hot cider and rolls will be served for the coffee social.

– Oakland Lutheran Church, 22042 850th Ave., Albert Lea, will hold a soup and pie luncheon from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Cost is $4.50 for adults and children. Kids under 5 eat free. There will also be crafts and baked goods available.

– The Albert Lea Art Center’s Festival of Trees continues from 10-2 p.m. There are 20 trees decorated with varying themes. Admission is free, but donations are accepted to help defray art center expenses.

– Youth for Christ will have a Christmas Tea and Luncheon from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Senior Center in the Skyline Mall. The menu includes assorted soups, breads and desserts as well as Christmas tea and coffee. A short program sharing some holiday cheer will feature Nancy Hockenberry of Albert Lea. Tables will be decorated by hostesses with their own Christmas theme. For information on tickets call Kathy Berger at 373-8521.

– Albert Lea United Methodist Women will hold a cookie walk from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church social hall, 702 Highway 69 S., Albert Lea. Cookies will be $6 per pound. Cutlery, greeting cards and gently used Christmas decorations will also be for sale.

– Crossroads Evangelical Free Church will present the dramatic musical &uot;Four Tickets To Christmas&uot; at the Albert Lea Civic Theatre at 2 and 7 p.m.

– The Alden Lions Club will host its fourth annual dinner theatre in the Alden School gymnasium. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. with the program starting at 7 p.m. Tickets for the event are $10 per person. They are available at all Andersen Hallmark stores in Albert Lea, from Alden Lions Club members or by calling 874-3695.

– The Sons of Norway Christmas party, &uot;Christmas in Norway, 1875,&uot; will be held at the Sons of Norway Lodge beginning at 7 p.m. The program will take party-goers from the preparation to Christmas Eve and Day, then the 12 days of Christmas. Refreshments will be served.

Sunday, Dec. 8

– The versatile and talented five-voice vocal ensemble, Voice Trek, will perform a concert of Christmas music at United Methodist Church in Albert Lea at 4 p.m. Together now for 15 years, Voice Trek, is known for their creative original arrangements, exceptional vocal harmonies, and dynamic blend. Their Christmas concert is filled with the most loved holiday music, and has been praised as “heartwarming” and an “unqualified success” by critics. Voice Trek members include three sisters; Rae, Vicki, and Shelley Plaster, complemented by tenor/Music Director Denis Allaire and bass Kevin Smith. Concert repertoire includes a wide array of styles – popular, contemporary, traditional, madrigal, and what Voice Trek is most known for – jazz. Songs include: &uot;Oh Come, 0 Come Emmanuel,&uot; &uot;The First Noel,&uot; &uot;What Child Is This?&uot; &uot;The NEW 12 Days of Christmas,&uot; &uot;The Coventry Carol,&uot; &uot;God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen&uot; and many more. There is no charge to attend the concert, but a freewill offering will be received to help defray expenses.
