Mary E. Vomacka, 83, Austin

Mary E. Vomacka, age 83, of Austin, died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003, at the Adams Healthcare Center.

Mary was born May 7, 1919, in Coggon, Iowa to George and Mary Anne (Dennis) Henderson. She graduated from Central City High School in Central City, Iowa, in 1939. She attended nursing school there also. Mary was united in marriage to Frank Vomacka in 1941. She was a farmer’s wife in the Austin area and they owned their own farm in McIntyre, Iowa, as well. Mary was a nurse at the Riceville Hospital in Riceville, Iowa. They moved to Austin in 1963 where she did private nursing. She worked as an LPN from 1964 to 1981 at Comforcare in Austin. She was a member of Queen of Angels Catholic Church where she was active in her unit and taught catechism. Mary enjoyed her family, the Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings, knitting, crocheting, her flowers and her pets. She gave blood for many years and got a 15-year pin. Mary enjoyed her handheld Yahtzee game.

Survivors include her son, Alfred (Candis) Vomacka of Austin; two daughters:

Kathleen Marie Schuna of Austin, and Betty Ann Towers of Austin; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Frank, in 1996; her parents; sister, Jessie Draayer; son-in-law, Ted Towers; and aunt and uncle: Mason and Sarah Henderson.

A funeral mass will be celebrated 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with the Rev. Kurt Farrell officiating. There will be a 5 p.m. CCW rosary and a 6:30 p.m. wake service today, Feb. 18, at Mayer Funeral Home, Austin, where friends may call from 5-8 p.m., and also from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
