Arlet Helland Gold, 84, Lake Mills, Iowa

Funeral services for Arlet Helland Gold will be held at 1 p.m. today, March 14, at North Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills, Iowa, with the Rev. Randy Baldwin officiating. Visitation was held from 6-8:30 p.m. Thursday, March 13 at Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Lake Mills, and again one hour before the service at the church. Burial will be at North Prairie Lutheran Cemetery.

Arlet Odina Gold was born on April 30, 1918, near Frost, the daughter of August and Hilda (Berge) Egeness. She graduated from high school at Blue Earth. On Sept. 9, 1936, she married Arnold Helland. They lived and farmed in south central Minnesota and north central Iowa for many years. As their children got older Arlet worked at the canning factory in Bricelyn, then Compact Industries and Deluxe Products in Lake Mills. In 1967 she began working at Streater in Albert Lea.

On July 23, 1973, Arlet married John Gordon Gold in Sioux Falls, S.D. They enjoyed visiting Arlet’s children and grandchildren, and listening and dancing to big band music with her brothers and sisters and friends.

Arlet retired from Streater in 1980. During her last years she treasured visits from her family.

Arlet died Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at the Lake Mills Care Center.

She is survived by her children: Ann Whitney of Minnetonka, Minn., Mona Massaro of Omaha, Neb., Sandra Lacher and her husband Curt of Burnsville, Allan Helland and his wife Bonnie of Charlotte, N.C., and Charles Helland and his wife Kathie of Lake Mills; 10 grandchildren; one step-grandchild; five great-grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; one step great-great-grandchild; three sisters: Gladys Ludwig of Wells, Hazel O’Rourke of Wells, and Irene Johnson of Frost; and one brother, Lester Egeness and his wife Mavis of Frost.

Arlet was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Arnold; her second husband, Gordie; five brothers: Otis, Jurgen, Howard, Ruthford and Arnold; and two sisters: Esther and Margaret.
