Baseball freshmen finish 9-10

Coach Jason Fornwald has released statistics for the 2003 Albert Lea ninth-grade baseball team.

The freshmen compiled a record of 9-10, scoring 138 runs while giving up 158, batting .297 as a team, with an on-base percentage of .432. They totaled 25 doubles, 10 triples, four home runs and eight stolen bases, walking 105 times while striking out 137.

After starting the season 2-7, the freshmen turned things around with doubleheader sweeps of Mankato West, Faribault and Rochester Mayo.

&uot;We had a 19-man roster, and everyone was able to make a positive contribution,&uot; said Fornwald.

Arik Matson had the team’s top batting average, .452 (14-for-31).

Also hitting .300 or better were Ben Berhow, .414 (24-for-58), Ben Kelly, .385 (20-for-52), Matt Schumann, .375 (12-for-32), Alex Paul, .308 (12-for-39), Mike Olson, .308 (8-for-26), Nate Goodnature, .304 (17-for-56) and Jake Villarreal, .304 (7-for-23).

Goodnature led the team with 21 runs scored, four triples, two home runs and two stolen bases. Schumann had the best on-base percentage, .574.

Other offensive leaders, by category: RBIs &045; Berhow 21, Kelly 16, Goodnature 14; doubles &045; Kelly five, Josh Jordahl four, Berhow four; walks &045; Jordahl 14, Goodnature 12, Schumann 11; sacrifices &045; Villarreal five.

Ten pitchers combined for an earned run average of 6.90, with 107 walks and 87 strikeouts in 117 2/3 innings. Opponents batted .242 against them.

John Anderson was 2-0 with one save and a 2.89 ERA in 9 2/3 innings, and Jordahl was 2-0 with a 3.25 ERA in 28 innings. Vietze went 2-1 with a team-high 24 strikeouts and 27 walks.

The rest of the squad included David Hird, Logan Ford, Adam Godeke, Tyler Peterson, Shane Walk, Nick Gosen, D.J. Kjos and Ben Czaplewski.
