James Stilson Eaton, 90, Cedar Valley, Iowa

James Stilson Eaton, age 90, resident of the Western Home’s Windermere Retirement Community, died on Thursday, July 17 of lung cancer at Allen Memorial Hospital.

He was born May 31, 1913 in Waterloo, Iowa, son of Thomas W. and Martha Stilson Eaton. He married Helen Sohner on May 22, 1948. She died Feb. 9, 1971. They are survived by their three children Susan Mendenhall (Don) of DeForest, Wis., Tom (Jean) of Albert Lea, and Jeffrey (Heidi Fatland) of Madison, Wis.; and four grandchildren, Andy Eaton (Steph Truhlar), Jeff Eaton, Luke Stater (Katie) and Kate Stater.

On Nov. 4, 1972 he married Eugenia Sheats in. Washington, D.C. She died Jan. 25, 1997.

He married and is survived by his wife Carolyn Petersen. They were married, on Dec. 19, 1998 in Cedar Falls. He is also survived by two step-daughters, Sue Weldon (Jerry) of Iowa Falls, Iowa, Judy Jorgensen (George) of Cedar Falls, seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Mr. Eaton, the director of purchasing for the Rath Packing Company, retired in 1978. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Elected to the Cedar Falls School Board for 18 years, he served as its president for eight of those years. Mr. Eaton was a member of St. Timothys United Methodist Church, the Waterloo Elks and the Cedar Falls American Legion.

Also surviving him is his brother, Richard (Pat) of Williamsburg, Va.

Visitation will be Sunday 1-4 p.m. at Richardson Funeral Home in Cedar Falls. A memorial service will be held at St. Timothys United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. on Monday,
