50 years ago – 1953

Named to the Southern Minnesota League West All-Star team from the Albert Lea Packers were pitcher Lee Roy “Stumpy” Jones, shortstop Verdon “Gilly” Gilchrist and outfielder Jim Watson.

The Albert Lea Junior American Legion baseball team lost to Austin 2-0. Archie Nelson and Gary Brabec had Albert Lea’s hits and Jack Sprenger was the losing pitcher.

In State Line amateur baseball the Albert Lea Merchants defeated London 16-2. Ralph Smith was the winning pitcher and Del Hoeve, Joe Jacobs, Al “Bub” Pieper and Irv Rickheim led the offense with two hits each.

The undefeated Wells Junior American Legion baseball team scored a 9-0 victory over Delavan. Larry Buschow pitched the shutout and hit a grand slam home run.

25 years ago – 1978

The Albert Lea American Legion baseball team, behind the three-hit pitching of Steve Curry, defeated Austin 2-0. Curry and Steve Cerrato each doubled and had an RBI.

In women’s slow-pitch softball the Manchester Merchants defeated the Emmons Merchants 16-3. Marsha Evenson homered for Manchester and Daria Brackey for Emmons.

Minnesota Twins pitcher Dave Goltz had a no-hitter for 7 1/3 innings in the Twins’ 7-0 win over Oakland. Goltz wound up with a three -hitter and improved his record to 8-3. Hosken Powell homered for the Twins.

10 years ago – 1993

Dave Winfield of the Twins had three hits, including a two-run homer, and passed Roger Hornsby and tied Jake Beckley for 23rd place on the career hit list with 2,931.

The Albert Lea American Legion baseball team defeated Rochester 3-0. Winning pitcher Mike Piechowski allowed three hits and was 2-for-3 at the plate.

Winning ALHS boys’ track awards: Tony Luna – Senior Award, Coaches Award and Captains Award; Troy Irvine – Senior Award, Most Inspirational and Captains Award; Dan Hebert – Senior Award, Most Valuable and Captains Award; Jake Christensen – Most Improved.
