Farmers’ market to hold kids’ day

The Albert Lea Farmers’ Market will hold children’s day from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday in the parking lot on the corner of North Broadway Avenue and Water Street in downtown Albert Lea. There will be many free activities for children, including laminated picture identification cards for all children (10 a.m.-noon only), pumpkin painting, a pumpkin bean bag toss and other games, and prizes. Sloppy joes, chips and other foods will be sold.

Following is a roundup of other events happening in the area this weekend.

-Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 320 W. College St., will hold a bake sale and bazaar featuring a log cabin quilt from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. Morning coffee will be served from 7-11 a.m. Lunch, featuring vegetable beef soup, sloppy joes, pie, coffee and milk, is from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Cost is $4.50 per person.

-The Herfindahl Gallery in the Albert Lea Art Center, 224 S. Broadway Ave., features the works of Cuban immigrant Luis Chamizo and a piece of work by his son Luis. Gallery hours are noon-4 p.m. There is no charge to attend.

-The North Star Corn Maze near Northwood, Iowa, is open from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Admission is $5 per person. Children 5 and under are admitted free.

Concessions, a gift shop and toilets are available on the grounds. To get to the corn maze, travel south on Highway 65 and watch for the signs.

-Northbridge Mall will hold a fall craft sale from 10 a.m.- 9 p.m.

-The Pelican Breeze will hold a pizza cruise at 6 p.m. Reservations are required before 4 p.m. Friday. Call 383-2630.

-Albert Lea Community Theatre presents the children’s play, &uot;Cinderella,&uot; at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $7 per person and are general admission. The box office is open from 3:30 p.m. until curtain time. The phone number is 377-4371.

Saturday, Sept. 20

-The final Young Eagle Flight Rally, offering free airplane rides for kids ages 8-17, will be held from 8:30 a.m.-noon at the Albert Lea Airport. Sign up, with parental permission, near the main hangar. The event is sponsored by the Experimental Aircraft Association Vintage Aircraft

Association, Chapter 13. For more information, call Paul Stieler at 377-2291. The rain date is Sept. 27.

-Northbridge Mall will hold a craft sale from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

-The Alden Lions will hold a chicken barbecue from 5-7 p.m. in the Alden-Conger School cafeteria. Cost is $6 for adults, $3 for children ages 5 to 12, and those under 5 eat free. Proceeds go toward community service projects. People may also bring their own eyeglasses in for recycling.

Sunday, Sept. 21

-Freeborn County’s &uot;Going to the Dogs&uot; pancake breakfast, a fund-raiser for the Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit, will be held from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Fairlane Building on the Freeborn County Fairgrounds. Freewill donations will be accepted. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans will provide matching funds.

-First Lutheran Church of Glenville will hold a Dad’s Belgian Waffles breakfast from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Cost is $5.50 for adults and $3 for children ages 5-10. Kids under 5 eat free. Proceeds will go to the Glenville First Lutheran Cemetery.

-The Myrtle Fire Department will hold a pancake breakfast from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Myrtle Fire Station. All proceeds will go to purchase firefighter safety equipment.

-The third annual &uot;Echoes from the Past: A Walk Through History&uot; will be held at Graceland Cemetery from 1-4 p.m. The event gives people an opportunity to wander through the cemetery and meet several people who played a significant role in the development of the county, people whose names are recorded several times for their contributions and others who went about their daily routines. Their stories will be told by area re-enactors and in one case a family member. The event is sponsored by the Freeborn County Historical Museum. Admission is $4 for adults and $2 for children 12 and under. Tickets will be available near the cemetery entrance on West Clark Street and visitors will tour the cemetery in escorted groups. Parking is available on Clark Street and on the north side of the road.

-A concert by blues performer Ross William Perry hopes to raise money for the Freeborn County Homeless Shelter, which is in danger of closing. The event will be from 3-8 p.m. at the Albert Lea municipal lot at Broadway Avenue and Water Street. Piggy Blues of Austin, will be on hand as a food vendor, contributing a portion of all sales for the day to the shelter. A $2 donation will be taken at the gate and the volunteers for the shelter will also be on hand to take donations during the concert. A guitar autographed by Perry will be auctioned off to raise additional funds for the shelter. For those who cannot attend, but would like to contribute, Security Bank Minnesota at 437 Bridge Ave. is handling donations for the shelter.
