Alton Horvei, 78, Albert Lea

The funeral service for Alton Horvei will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, at United Methodist Church, Albert Lea. The Rev. John Bromeland will officiate. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at Bonnerup Funeral Service, and one hour before the service at the church. Military honors will be accorded by the Albert Lea Veterans’ Organization.

Alton died at his home in Albert Lea on Friday, Oct. 3, 2003. He was 78 years old.

Alton was born in Worth County, Iowa, on July 16, 1925, the son of Arthur and Selma (Henderson) Horvei. He was a 1944 graduate of Lake Mills High School, Lake Mills, Iowa. He served with the U.S. Navy from 1945-46.

On Dec. 31, 1951, he was united in marriage with Eileen Carlson at Trinity Lutheran Church, Albert Lea. They were members of United Methodist Church in Albert Lea where Alton was active as an usher and had served on the finance board. He enjoyed carpentry work and in 1959, built his family’s home.

Alton worked as an engineer with Wilson & Co. for 42 years. The Albert Lea community was important to him and he was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Sons of Norway, Kiwanis, Chairman of the Board for Senior Towers and Court, and had been treasurer of the Union Center, Local Chapter #6.

Alton is survived by three children: Julie Bock and her children, Megan and Caitlin, of Lakewood, Colo., Peggy (Dennis) Owens and their children, Brett and Derek, of Littleton, Colo., and Timothy Horvei and his children, Levi and Ellen, of Stewartville; one sister, Dorothy (Vance) Hill of Albert Lea; special friend, Beulah Wiegand of Albert Lea; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Eileen, in 1997; and one brother, Donald Horvei.
