Memorial services for Edward A. Westland Jr., age 73, a lifelong resident of the Albert Lea/Freeborn County area, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, at the Good Samaritan Center Chapel. The Rev. Doug Smither and the Rev. Kent Otterman will officiate. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. A family memorial service will be held in the Norfolk Botanical Gardens on March 15th, Ed’s birthday. Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Ed went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Feb. 22, 2004, at the Good Samaritan Center.

Edward Alton Westland Jr. was born March 15, 1930, on a farm near Hayward to Edward and Anna Nicholina (Runden) Westland. He was baptized and confirmed at Hayward Lutheran Church. Eddie attended rural schools and graduated from Ellendale High School in 1948. He served four years in the United States Navy and received an honorable discharge. Eddie returned to Albert Lea and was employed by Skinner’s/Herberger’s Department Store from 1955-1972 as an office manager. He worked at Gibson’s/Pamida Discount Center as an assistant manager from 1972-1982.

Eddie retired from Thorne Crest Retirement Center in 1994. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and had been a resident of the Good Samaritan Center since September 1999. Eddie loved gardening and flowers.

Survivors include his children: Maryann and her husband Scott Price and their daughters, Emelie and Madeleine, of Chesapeake, Va.; John Westland of Norfolk, Va.; and Sue Ellen and her husband John Carvil and their son, John Regan, of Virginia Beach, Va. He is also survived by his sister, Emily Bengtson of the Good Samaritan Center, and several nieces and nephews.

Eddie was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and a sister.
