ALHS track girls second at Mankato

MANKATO &045; The times continue to drop, the throws and jumps are up, and the handoffs are getting smoother for the Albert Lea High School girls’ track and field team.

But it’s still tough to get a good idea of where the Tigers are at this point of the season.

Coach Margo Wayne altered the lineup in a four-team meet at Mankato Tuesday as the Tigers prepare for Thursday’s True Team Section 2A Meet.

&uot;Performance-wise, the kids really placed well,&uot; said Wayne. &uot;We’re kind of excited about coming up to the tournament part of our season.&uot;

Rochester Mayo won Tuesday with 101 points, followed by Albert Lea with 59, Winona 54 and Mankato West 53.

Three Tigers finished first: Kelly Schreiber, 100-meter hurdles; Andrea Irvine, discus; and Emily Bartusek, 200. Bartusek added a second in the 100 and teamed with Cara Thorn, Stacie Armstrong and Elyce Rehmke for second in the 4×400 relay.

Becky Birkhofer, Jenny Larson, Krista Horejsi and Annie Berger combined for second in the 4×100 relay. Also taking second were Horejsi, 300 hurdles; and Schreiber, high jump.

Other ALHS places: Alicia Reyerson, third, discus; Jenny Birkhofer, third, triple jump and fourth, long jump; Thorn, third, 400; 4×800 relay, third (Amy Leach, Leah Gilbertson, Kaylee Hable, Whitney Wilson); 4×200 relay, third (Becky Birkhofer, Armstrong, Rehmke, Larson); Alicia Anderson, fourth, high jump and fifth, triple jump; Schreiber, fourth, pole vault; Amber Edwards, fifth, triple jump; Leach, fifth, 800.

Rochester Mayo won the junior varsity meet with 86 points. Mankato West had 70, Winona 49, Albert Lea 37. Carly Schmitz won the 800 for the Tigers’ lone first.

The True Team Section 2AA Meet is Thursday at Fairmont.
