G-E takes consolation crown in tournament

LE ROY &045; The letdown that Glenville-Emmons volleyball coach Lisa Ziebell was dreading finally happened.

But the Wolverines were able to play through it.

G-E, which won twice in Southeast Conference play during homecoming week, lost their first two matches before winning three straight to take the consolation crown in Saturday’s LeRoy-Ostrander invitational.

&uot;The girls were tired coming off homecoming week and four hours on the bus Thursday night,&uot; said Ziebell. &uot;The girls picked up their play as the day went on. I don’t think we’re a morning team.&uot;

The Wolverines lost 25-8, 25-17 to Elgin-Millville and 25-18, 25-18 to Lanesboro in pool play before knocking off Alden-Conger 25-14, 25-13 to avenge a recent regular-season loss. It left the Wolverines third in their pool. They defeated Cannon Valley 25-12, 25-12 in the consolation semifinals and, in a rematch with Alden-Conger, the Wolverines won 25-14, 25-21.

G-E’s leaders for the day: Jordan Claussen 56-for-57 serving, 13 aces, 39 points, 30 set assists, 38 digs, 3 ace blocks; Chelsey Ziebell 21-for-21 serving, six aces, 10 points, 14 kills, 35 digs, three assists; Sam Stadheim 28-for-30 serving, 20 points, seven kills, two ace blocks, seven digs; Stephanie Peterson 27-for-30 serving, six aces, 16 points, nine kills, five ace blocks, 51 digs; Mallory Paulsen 40 digs; Miranda Kral 22 digs; Alicia Reyerson 14-for-15 serving, four points, 14 kills, nine digs, six blocks; Amanda Epland 8-for-9 serving, six points, 13 kills; Amanda Weiss 31-for-33 serving, four aces, 16 points, 14 digs; Ashley Lau 2-for-3 serving; Lindsey Lorenzen 3-for-3 serving.

&uot;In these tournaments, as the day goes on, you can either rise to the occasion or fall,&uot; said Coach Ziebell. &uot;We rose tot he occasion. It was a good day after a slow start.&uot;

The Wolverines, 6-2 in the Southeast Conference, improved to 10-7 overall. They play a conference match Tuesday at Lyle/Austin Pacelli.
