Editorial: Show soldiers community support

On Sunday, the soldiers with the National Guard Company D, 135th Infantry are expected to return. They’ve been providing security for reconstruction teams in Afghanistan.

The community is planning a grand homecoming for them, and we urge everyone to turn out for the welcome home festivities. A parade, with a time to be announced, will be held that day.

It’s important for the soliders to know that the community as a whole supports what they’re doing and appreciates them. They’ve been away from their families, friends, jobs and community a long time.

Residents and businesses are encouraged to make their own signs or wave flags to show support for the returning soldiers during the parade.

The parade will begin at New Denmark Park, move to Bridge Avenue, then to Fountain Street, up to Broadway Avenue and down William Street.

Soldiers will be in buses during the parade. After the parade is over, they will be transported to the Armory where they will meet up with family for the first time since their deployment. We hope it proves to be a happy time for all of them.

So plan to turn out, wave those flags and signs, and personally say thanks. It’s the least we can do.
