ST. PETER &045; United South Central got the singles win it was looking for but a doubles loss proved to be costly as St. James upended the Rebels 4-3 in the 2A tennis section final at Gustavus Adolphus Thursday.
The victory was the second of the year for St. James over USC, and it came by the same score to send them to the team state meet.
In the earlier matchup, USC lost all four singles matches, but this time around No. 4 Carolyn Schmitz was able to pull out a two-set victory 6-4, 6-2 to set up a Rebel win if they could sweep doubles.
Amanda Redman and Molly Yokiel had a hard fought two-set match at No. 1 doubles but pulled out the win for USC 7-5, 6-4 and Jessica Stensrud and Emma Stenzel won at No. 2 6-1 and 6-3 to tie the match at 3-3.
Kellie Robbins and Aleshia Adams won the first set in the No. 3 doubles match but could not get either of the final two losing 0-6, 3-6.
St. James began the match by winning the first three singles matches. Jill Stenzel lost 3-6, 1-6, Andrea Allis lost 0-6, 4-6 and Jordan Anderson fell 0-6, 4-6.
The Rebels finished the season with a 7-5 overall mark after winning the Gopher Conference title.
