Carl Johnson, 87, New Richland

The funeral service for Carl I. Johnson will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Vista Lutheran Church, rural New Richland. The Rev. Cary Larson will officiate. Burial will be in Vista Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Friedrich Funeral Home in New Richland and one hour before the service at the church. Military honors will be accorded by the New Richland veterans organizations.

Carl died Monday, July 30, 2007, at New Richland Care Center. He was 87 years old.

Carl was born in Pocahontas, Iowa, on April 8, 1920, the son of Iver and Elsa (Olson) Johnson. He was baptized and confirmed at Vista Lutheran Church. He attended country school in New Richland Township, District 85. He was a 1940 graduate of New Richland High School and attended the Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis. During Word War II he served with the U.S. Navy from 1945-46.

On Aug. 29, 1948, Carl was united in marriage with Evalonne Huntington in Owatonna. He was an active member of Vista Lutheran Church where he had been on the church council. Carl and Lonne operated a dairy farm in the New Richland area.

Carl was an avid baseball fan and enjoyed watching Twins games. He liked going to eat with friends and in the fall going to lutefisk dinners with his sister, Agnes. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, playing pool, doing puzzles and shooting clay pigeons.

Carl is survived by five children: Judy (George) Bushlack of Marion, Iowa, Jule (Wendy) Johnson of Waseca, Jay Johnson and his fiancee, Stephanie Fethke of Albert Lea, Jim (Sandy) Johnson of Freeborn, and Jeanne (Roger) Kramer of Waucoma, Iowa; 22 grandchildren: Jody, Jeremy, Johanna, Johnse, Josiah, Chrystal, Jessie, Carly, Ariel, Trevor, Jacob, Logan, Matthew, Johnathan, Jamie, Cassandra, Jordan, Kelli, Kayla, Buck, Karl, Kalissa; 20 great-grandchildren; one special beloved sister, Agnes Priebe of Waseca; three brothers-in-law: LeVern Huntington of Brooklyn Park, Robert Huntington of Sandstone, DeWayne (Peggy) Huntington of Hinkley; two sisters-in-law: Jean Huntington of Sandstone and Vivian Huntington of Sauk Rapids; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Evalonne in 1990; one great-grandson, Max Bushlack; two brothers: Harold and Bertil Johnson; one sister, Esther Chamberlain; three brothers-in-law: Gordon, Dougal, and Jerroll Huntington.
