William Paul, 85, Albert Lea

Funeral services for William Henry Paul of Albert Lea will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Church of Christ Christian, Albert Lea. The Rev. Mike Gerhardt will officiate. Interment will be at the Shady Oaks Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Freeborn County Veterans organizations. William died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2007, at Bethesda Rehabilitation Hospital, in St. Paul.

William &8220;Bill&8221; Henry Paul was born on Aug. 6, 1922, to Julius and Mathilda (Kueck) Paul in Marshall. Bill attended rural schools in Marshall. He joined the Army and served under General Patton in World War II. His was one of two surviving tanks in the 137th Tank Battalion in the Battle of the Bulge. After his discharge in 1945 he served in the Reserves. He was recalled to active duty during the Korean War in 1950 as an instructor at Camp McCoy; he was then discharged in 1952. Bill was united in marriage to Betty Lenz on July 8, 1951, at the First Presbyterian Church in Albert Lea. He was employed as a welder at Queen Products (Scotsman) and after retiring worked at Napa Auto Parts. Bill was a member of the VFW where he served as an honor guard. He was also a member of the American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans and the Eagles Club. He attended the Church of Christ Christian in Albert Lea and participated in the Live Nativity there for over 12 years. Bill enjoyed his bowling league and was the secretary for many years. He loved to go and watch high school sports events, especially wrestling. Bill enjoyed woodworking, and travel. He especially enjoyed a trip back to Europe in 1999 when he was able to tour the places where he had served in the military. Bill took great pride in his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Betty; children Judy (Glenn) Addington of Tennessee, Roger (Kristy) Paul of Albert Lea, Brian (Susie) Paul of Albert Lea; grandchildren, Elizabeth Addington of Tennessee, Jonathan (Kristen) Addington of Tennessee, Alex and Macy Paul of Albert Lea; sister Gladys (Walter) DeSaer of Marshall.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Hilda, Emma, Ann, Martha, and Elsie; brothers, George, Carl and Albert.
