Albert Lea boys track finishes in a three way tie for second; girls third at quad meet

The Albert Lea boys&8217; track team finished in a three-way tie for second place at its quadrangular meet Thursday against Mankato West, Austin and Rochester Mayo.

The Scarlets won the meet decidedly with 89 points while the Tigers, Packers and Spartans all finished with 58 points.

Sophomore Matt Tiegs won the 200 and 400-meter dash for the Tigers. Tiegs ran a 23.4 in the 200 and a 50.9 in the 400. Tiegs also took third in the long jump, going 18 feet, two inches.

Senior Richie Needham won the long jump event with a leap of 18 feet, four inches. Junior Hector Rivera took second in the triple jump with a mark of 40 feet, six 1/2 inches and fellow junior Ethan Marquardt took first in the 3,200 with a time of 10:23.

Marquardt added a second place finish in the 1,600 with a time of 4:45 and senior Tyler Hitchcock took second in the high jump by clearing 5-10.

Sophomore Trevor Rassmussen gave Albert Lea a third place finish in the 800 with a time of 2:09.

The meet was yet another sign for head coach Lisa Deyak that the program is beginning to turn a new leaf.

&8220;We&8217;ve had some really positive things happen this year,&8221; Deyak said. &8220;We&8217;re still working at our consistency. We gain a little more confidence with every meet.&8221;

The girls&8217; team finished third at its quadrangular, coming in behind Rochester Mayo and Mankato West.

The Spartans scored 90 points for the win while the Scarlets grabbed 72 and the Tigers had 60. Austin finished with 50 points.

Albert Lea had three relay teams finish in the top two with the 4×800 team of Brittni Lair, Alyssa Seger, Sarah Wenum and Alex Ciota turning in the top time. The 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams earned second place finishes.

Wenum added a win the 800 for the Tigers and Lair took second in the 200.
