Gerald Harty

Funeral services for Gerald (Jerry) M. Harty of Albert Lea will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Theodore Catholic Church. The Rev. James Berning and Deacon Mike Ellis will officiate. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 4 until 8 p.m. with a scripture prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in St. Theodore Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the Albert Lea area veterans groups.
Jerry died Sunday morning, Oct. 5, 2008, at the Thorne Crest Retirement Center in Albert Lea. He was 81 years of age.
Jerry was born July 13, 1927, in St Paul, the son of Dennis and Mary (Mattocks) Harty. He graduated high school in Albert Lea. Jerry served in the U.S. Navy during World War ll and during the Korean War.
On July 13, 1957, Jerry was united in marriage to Rose Marie (Babbini) in Mountain Iron. During the time between wars, Jerry was employed by the Wilson Company, and after the Korean Conflict he was a Postal Carrier for the Albert Lea Post Office for 35 years.
Jerry was a member of St. Theodore Catholic Church and was active with the Loaves and Fishes and serving funeral lunches. He was a member of the American Legion, Elks Club, Knights of Columbus and served Meals on Wheels for over 20 years. Jerry also delivered books for the Albert Lea Public Library to area nursing homes. In his free time he enjoyed gardening, reading and American history.
Jerry is survived by his children: Catherin and her husband Randy Kight of Sartell and Kevin and his wife Sandy Harty of Superior, Wis. Grandchildren include; Emily and Spencer Kight, Melissa Harty and Cassie Keeler. There are two sisters; Mary Rita (Richard) Spellman of Apple Valley, Joan Barrus of Crookston, and one brother Charles (Mary) Harty of Albert Lea. Other family includes sisters-in-law Dorothy Harty of Albert Lea and Gail Harty of Glenville.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; wife Rose Marie in 2005; brothers Richard and Ted; and brother-in-law Bill Barrus.
