Try as she might Lauren Klick couldn’t do it all for the Albert Lea girls’ hockey team Tuesday night in its season opener on the road in Northfield.

The junior winger scored a hat trick for the Tigers (0-1-0) in a 6-3 loss. Klick scored twice in the first period to give Albert Lea a 2-1 lead, but it wouldn’t hold up as the Raiders speed wore down the Tigers in the last two periods.

Northfield (2-0-0) countered Klick with Maren Dvorak and Katie Jirik. Each had a pair of goals for the Raiders. Dvorak finished the game with four points and Jirik had three.

Klick scored the first goal of the game at the 12:13 mark of the first with an assist going to Madi Passingham and Amy Gackstetter.

Dvorak tied the game at 13:26 in the first on a power play goal, but Klick responded with a shorthanded goal at the 13:58 mark of the first to put Albert Lea up 2-1.

In the second period Northfield started to hit its stride as Jirik tied the game at 2:54 and Dvorak scored at 15:10 to take the lead 3-2.

“Everything was working smoothly,” Tigers head coach Brian Blatti said. “In the second period Northfield adjusted its offense.”

The Raiders moved a forward up top and started finding more scoring opportunities in the final two periods, scoring a total of five goals in the final two periods.

Klick made it a 4-3 game in the third after Carly Oto scored 1:53 into the third. The Tigers wouldn’t get any closer as the Raider scored two more goals for the 6-3 final.

The Tigers were without Jenna Christensen, who is out for the season with a knee injury she suffered during the soccer season, and have a handful of players battling injuries ranging from ankle injuries to concussions. Albert Lea played with 2 1/2 lines for most of the game and had a hard time keeping up with Northfield’s speed because of its short bench.

“I think they were running out gas,” Blatti said of the team’s play late in the game. “I think they were kind of exhausted and shutdown.”

The final two goals for the Raiders came 50 seconds apart from each other.

Kelli Hanson stopped 18 shots in net for the Tigers.

Albert Lea had four power play opportunities in the game and came away empty handed on each.

“We’ve got room for improvement,” Blatti said.

The Tigers travel to Mankato West next Tuesday for their next game.
