Valborg Berg

Funeral services for Valborg (Vollie) Catherine (Hansing) Berg, 98, of Albert Lea, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church, Albert Lea. The Rev. John Holt will officiate. Interment will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood, Iowa. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church.
Valborg died on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008, at Pleasant Manor Nursing Home, Faribault.
Valborg C. (Hansing) Berg was born March 21, 1910, in Thompson, Iowa. She was the daughter of Henry and Marie (Dahle) Hansing. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
She married Leighton “Skipper” Berg on March 30, 1936. They lived in Albert Lea all their married life. Skipper preceded her in death in 1995.
Vollie graduated from business college, Luther Academy in Albert Lea in 1928. She later went back to school and completed a bachelor of science degree in education and library science in 1966 from Mankato State College. She went on to receive her master of science degree in research library dcience and media in 1973 from Mankato State College.
She worked in the business world as a private secretary and bookkeeper, taught school and was the research librarian and assistant director at the Freeborn County Historical Society. Vollie was nominated for inclusion in the Who’s Who of American Women in 1976. Vollie was very active in helping her husband, Skipper, run the Viking Accordion Band from 1936 until 1995 when Skipper passed away. She was instrumental in publishing the book, “Viking Accordion Band Reflects Colorful History,” in 1992, which Skipper and her wrote telling the history of the band. She was also active in the Sons of Norway, Normanna Lodge, of which she was a life member. She was a member of the Albert Lea Audubon Society for many years. Vollie enjoyed traveling and had the opportunity to travel to many different countries. She also enjoyed working on the family genealogy.
Vollie is survived by three children and six grandchildren: Roger and his wife Lynn Berg and grandchildren Ryan Berg and Brea Berg; Jean and her husband Robert Brabec, grandchildren Jennifer Merenda and her husband Joe, great-grandchildren Jake and Jessie, Dale Brabec and his wife Amy, great-grandchild Duncan, Lowell and his wife Flavia Berg, and grandchildren Steven Berg, Cheryl Langford and her husband Lance and great-grandchildren Tyler and Rita, and Brian Berg and great-grandchildren Kory and Jewel.
Vollie was preceded in death by her husband, Skipper Berg; her parents; two brothers, Earl Hansing and Harold Hansing; and two sisters, Irene Wilson and Henrietta Halvorson.
