Funeral services for Alice Bjerke, age 97, of Albert Lea will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at East Freeborn Lutheran Church. The Rev. Matt Griggs will officiate. Interment will be at East Freeborn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., on Friday at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church. Alice died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008 at St. John’s Lutheran Home.
Alice Christopherson Bjerke was born on July 3, 1911 to Carl Christopherson and Helga Lee Christopherson in Osseo, Wis. She was baptized by the Rev. Hjelmer Vick and confirmed by the Rev. O.C. Aune, pastors at the Osseo Lutheran Church in Osseo. On June 11, 1939 she was united in marriage to Wilford Bjerke and they lived on the Bjerke farm in rural Albert Lea. In 1950 they moved to Clarks Grove where Wilford was a parts manager at the Clarks Grove Hardware Store and Alice worked as a clerk at Bob’s Food Market for over 20 years.
Alice was an active member of East Freeborn Lutheran Church. She was a charter member of the altar guild and was active in the women’s organizations. She was a busy volunteer at St. John’s Home for over 18 years and for many years she and Wilford delivered Meals on Wheels. Alice and Wilford enjoyed traveling and over the years traveled many miles both domestically and overseas.
Survivors include several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Wilford in 1996.
