George Flattum

Funeral services for George Melvin Flattum, 74, of Albert Lea, will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Todd Walsh will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service.
George died Monday, Dec. 1, 2008, at St. John’s Lutheran Home.
George Melvin Flattum was born on Aug. 9, 1934 to John and Anna (Anderson) Flattum in Northwood, Iowa. George grew up in the Silver Lake area. He was united in marriage to Sadie Shargent on Sept. 5, 1959, in Mason City, Iowa. After their marriage the couple lived in the Waseca and Albert Lea area. George was self-employed training race horses. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Albert Lea, the USTA, and enjoyed horses, being outside working in the yard, music and singing hymns. George enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. After his stroke, George enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins.
Survivors include his wife, Sadie; children, Kelly (Nancy) Flattum, John Flattum and fianceé Mary Burhop, Michael (Therese) Flattum, Jeffrey (Crystal) Flattum and Terri Marpe; grandchildren, Melaina, Brooke and Jordan Flattum, Cory Flattum, Jennifer (Isaiah) Prescott, Samantha and Derek Flattum, Noah Hill, Maxwell Brekke, Emily Flattum, Nicole (Brad) Edwards, Mollie and Andrew Hernandez; great-grandchild, Mya Jacobson; brother, Art (Debbie) Flattum; and sisters, Josephine Sherwood and Gladys (Ralph) Sabin.
George was preceded in death by his parents, John and Anna Flattum; in-laws, Thomas and Elenore Shergant; brothers, Orville and Carl Flattum; sister-in-law, Trudie Jensen; and brother-in-law, Alfred Jensen.
