The varsity choir from Albert Lea High School will be traveling to a Broadway touring production of “White Christmas” at the Ordway Theatre in St. Paul on Wednesday, Dec. 17. The music for the show was composed by Irving Berlin and promises to be a true 1940s extravaganza type show. Busing costs were provided for the group by an arts outreach grant from the Minnesota Perpich Center for the Arts.

Lakeview students present program

On Friday, Lakeview fifth- and sixth-grade students will perform a program titled, “The Magic Jukebox.” The students will sing songs learned in music, perform dances learned in physical education and display their work from art class.

The performances are at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Lakeview gym.

Third-graders visit TV station

Third graders from Hawthorne Elementary visited KAAL 6 News on Nov. 26. Students got to see the newsroom and visit with Axel Gumble for about 20 minutes. They saw the Weather Center and got to meet Rusty Dawkins and Chris Kubal. As part of the Weather Center, students got to be part of the weather and point to different areas in front of the green dcreen.

After that, students got to sit on the same chairs as Nicole King and Brandon McElwain. There they learned about the teleprompters and different technology used in the live newscasts.

First ‘Everyday Math Night’ a success

Thank you to those fourth- and fifth-grade families that participated in the first of three “Everyday Math Nights” at Halverson Elementary on Nov. 20.

Parents and students experienced workshops relating to multiplication, division, the fourth- and fifth-grade Minnesota Mathematics Standards, as well as played everyday math games that reinforced and practiced what the students are learning in their math classrooms every day.

Each family went home with a goodie-bag filled with the necessary items needed to play and practice math concepts together at home and a parent handbook not only to help parents answer those “tough” questions, but also to provide additional math resources that may be valuable to both their student and themselves.

At the end of the evening, all came together and were treated to cookies, juice and door prizes.

Organizers look forward to an even bigger turn-out in February.
