Tigers take 2 of 3 at triangular

The Albert Lea wrestling team finished 2-1 on the weekend in Caledonia while facing two of the top teams in Class AA.

The No. 4-ranked Tigers (5-3) began the day against Caledonia-Houston-Spring Grove and won 47-24.

Once again the lower weight classes set the tone early for Albert Lea, as the Tigers took the first five matches. Albert Lea won four of those matches with pinfalls and the other was a technical fall win.

The early dominance gave the Tigers a 28-0 lead as Trey Hable, Dalton Westerlund, Adam Clark and Cody Hansen all won with falls. Cory Hansen picked up a 16-0 technical fall victory as well.

Albert Lea faced Kasson-Mantorville, No. 11-ranked in Class AA, and came away with a 42-20 victory.

The Tigers started with six straight victories for a 25-0 lead and continued to roll from there.

Albert Lea head coach Larry Goodnature inserted some wrestlers into different spots as he continues to search for the best lineup early in the season. Saturday provided good competition for the Tigers to see how they stack up.

The only loss on the day came against Plainview-Elgin-Millville and that went down to the wire as Albert Lea fell 31-28.

The Bulldogs, rated No. 5 in Class AA by The Guillotine, trailed by three entering the final match and got a pinfall victory from seventh-ranked Cam Miller to seal the victory.

It was a close dual throughout and easily could have gone the other way for the Tigers. Trevor Rasmussen went to overtime in his match at 135 pounds and fell 5-3 and Albert Lea nearly had a pin on its hands at 103 with Trey Hable. Instead Hable and the Tigers had to settle for a major decision.

Goodnature inserted Adam Clark at 125 and Clark had a solid day, going 2-1. Clark pulled off an upset victory against Kasson-Mantorville as he defeated No. 2-ranked Donovan Sullivan 8-4.

Ethan Reed moved from 285 to 215 for two matches Saturday and went 2-0 with two pinfall victories. He also won his lone match at 285 with a fall.

Cory and Cody Hansen each went 3-0 as well. Cory picked up two victories by fall and another by technical fall while Cody had two first period pins and a 4-0 decision.

The Tigers return to the mat this weekend as they head to the Christmas Tournament in Rochester. The tournament is one of the premier events of the season with teams coming from across the Midwest to participate.
