The Albert Lea wrestling team took third place at the Kiffmeyer Duals in St. Cloud Saturday with a 2-1 record.

“I thought we had a great weekend with that type of competition up there,” said Tigers head coach Larry Goodnature.

The No. 3-ranked Tigers opened the tournament with a 42-15 win over Cambridge-Isanti, the No. 4 ranked team in Class 3A. Albert Lea fell in its second round dual with Foley, No. 3 in Class 2A, 40-15 but bounced back for a win against St. Michael-Albertville, the No. 6-ranked team in Class 2A, to finish third.

Hastings won the tournament with a 33-24 win over Foley in the finals.

“I was really pleased with how we wrestled,” Goodnature said. “As a whole, our whole team wrestled very well.”

Cody and Cory Hansen and Trevor Rasmussen all went 3-0 on the day for the Tigers in a competition loaded with state champions and state entrants.

“Right now it’s making us better,” Goodnature said of the competition. “It’s giving us confidence. I like where we’re at. We’re improving. We haven’t reached our peak yet.”

Logan Kortan made his return to the mat for Albert Lea in his first action of the season. Kortan went 2-1 on the day. His only loss was a one-point decision against Justin Bowland, the No. 6-ranked wrestler at 160 in Class 2A, in the Foley dual.

“Kortan looked good,” Goodnature said. “He will definitely improve.”

The Albert Lea junior varsity also finished third at the tournament.

The JV squad beat Hastings 63-12, lost 35-24 to Foley and beat Cambridge-Isanti 33-32.
