There were no barns being set on fire Friday in Albert Lea when John Marshall and the Albert Lea girls’ basketball team matched up.

The Rockets scored a 37-18 win on a night where neither team was lighting it up from the field.

The Tigers put up just three points in the first half on 1-for-22 shooting while John Marshall put up 20 in the first half.

Albert Lea finished the night shooting 14 percent and the Rockets shot just 30 percent.

“We could not buy a basket,” said Tigers head coach Sean Gillam. “You can’t win when you’re shooting like that.”

Gillam also said that the length of John Marshall affected his team’s shooting performance.

“It wasn’t like we were taking horrible shots,” Gillam said. “We were letting them intimidate our shots.”

Albert Lea wanted to slow the game down Friday night and focus on breaking the Rockets’ press carefully and methodically, Gillam said.

Abbey Arends scored half of Albert Lea’s points with nine while no other player finished with more than two points.

Nytor Longar scored 18 points to lead John Marshall.

Gillam said despite the poor shooting performance there were some positives that came out of the game.

The Tigers committed just four turnovers and were able to play some strong defense.
