Virginia Flattum, 88

Memorial services for Virginia Mattson Flattum, 88, of Albert Lea will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Jeff Laeger-Hagemeister will officiate. Interment will be in North Freeborn Cemetery. Friends may greet the family one hour prior to the time of the service.
Virginia died on Friday, Feb. 27, 2009, at St. John’s Lutheran Home.
Virginia Helen Mattson Flattum was born on March 31, 1920, in Mandan, N.D., the daughter of Eugene and Gertrude (Vogel) Coombes. She lived in North Dakota as a young girl and moved to Lake Crystal where she graduated from high school. On June 24, 1939, she was married to Arvid Mattson, who preceded her in death in 1963. On May 26, 1979, Virginia married Toye Flattum. Virginia worked for many years as a cashier at the Piggly Wiggly and IGA stores. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and had been a Sunday School teacher at North Freeborn Lutheran Church. She was also a member of the Eagles Auxiliary. Virginia enjoyed bowling, dancing, old-time music, and being with her grandchildren
Survivors include her children: Merlene and Bill Keeler of Shorewood and their children Mike, Diane, and Mark; Sven and Cheri Mattson of Henderson and their children Jennifer, Sarah, Matt, Derek, and Nicole; Thomas and Melodie Mattson of Ellendale and their children Krister and Anders; and Paul and Robyn Mattson of Albert Lea and their children Egan, Alrik, and Abby.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Gertrude Coombes; her husbands: Arvid Mattson and Toye Flattum; her son, Clair Mattson; grandson, Steve Keeler; and brothers: John and Eugene.
