It was clear it was the first game of the season for the Glenville-Emmons and Spring Grove baseball teams Thursday in Spring Grove.

Both teams combined for six errors and six unearned runs in a 6-4 Wolverine win.

Jon Mittag pitched four innings of shutout ball to pick up his first victory of the season. Mittag struck out nine hitters, but walked five.

Glenville-Emmons escaped a jam in the fifth inning. Garret Schumaker came on in relief with the bases loaded and no outs, but was able to escape unscathed. Schumaker got two strikeouts and a fly ball to set the Lions down.

Spring Grove did strike in the sixth for three runs to draw the game to 4-3, but the runs came with two outs.

“I knew it wasn’t going to be a perfect game by any means,” said Wolverines head coach Louie Toulouse.

Glenville-Emmons struck out 12 times at the plate.

Mittag went 2-for-2 at the plate, while Michael Thofson went 1-for-2, with an RBI, and Tyler Woodside drove in two runs.
