Carl James Kalvig, 72, Northwood, Iowa, died Sunday, May 10, 2009, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa.
A funeral service for Carl will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church, 309 N. Ninth St., Northwood, with the Rev. Barbara Wills officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood. Visitation will be held from 4 until 7 p.m. today at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. South, Northwood. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to service time on Wednesday at the church.
Carl James Kalvig, was born on Sept. 26, 1936, in Mason City, the son of Verne and Marie (Thiel) Kalvig. He was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood. Carl received his education in the Mason City and Northwood Community Schools.
Carl was united in marriage to Dorothy Jensen in July 1955, and to this union four boys were born: Edward, Scott, Michael and Steven. He was united in marriage to Carolyn Land on Oct. 4, 1965, and to this union a son was born, Carl Jr.
Carl worked for Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood for six years before working at the sugar beet factory in Mason City. In 1966, Carl started working for Queen Stove Works in Albert Lea as a machine and inspector specialist for 22 years. In 1989, Carl and Carolyn started a lunch wagon service for auctions, which they worked for eight years. This got Carl started going to auctions, which was a great pastime for him. Carl also had a saw and blade sharpening business, which he ran from his home shop.
Carl was a proud member of the Northwood Alcoholic Anonymous group.
Carl and Carolyn enjoyed traveling to Wisconsin driving through the hills and the Mississippi River, collecting antique tractors and loved purchasing tools at the auction sales as well as watching old westerns and CNN on television and going to casinos.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Carolyn Kalvig of Northwood; his children: Michael (Pam) Kalvig of Morgan, Steven (Loraine) Kalvig of Grafton, Iowa, Edward (Roberta) Kalvig of Minneapolis, Scott (Mary) Kalvig of Northwood, Carl (Roxanne) Kalvig, Jr. of Clear Lake, Iowa, and John (Jolene) Berg of Northwood; 23 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; three brothers: Donald (Shirley) Kalvig of Northwood, Arthur (Catherine) Kalvig of Northwood, and David (Betty Jane) Kalvig of Mason City; two sisters: Verna (Gene) Weitzel of Northwood, and Dorothy (Jim) Schoolcraft of Hudson, Iowa; many nieces and nephews; as well as other extended family members and friends.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents; great-granddaughter, Madyson Hall; three brothers: Merle, Elmer, and Raymond Kalvig; a sister, Rachael; his stepmother, Mabel; and stepsister, Karen.
