The man who allegedly stole a police vehicle and then led authorities on a high-speed chase last month has been transferred to the Mower County Jail.

Austin resident Jeremy Winkel, 27, had been in custody in Worth County, Iowa, after a 38-mile chase ended with his arrest in Northwood, Iowa.

Winkel faces four felony charges in Mower County, where the chase began after authorities responded to a fight between Winkel and his father. Winkel fled, and while authorities searched for him, Winkel hopped into an Austin squad car.

Police chief Paul Phillip said he hasn’t heard further details on how exactly Winkel entered the vehicle.

Winkel made his first appearance in Mower County District Court June 9 and is scheduled for another appearance June 18.
