Waseca shuts down Colonels

The Albert Lea Colonels hadn’t played a home game all season until Wednesday and the problems that plagued the team through the first six games of the season continued in their home opener against Waseca.

The Albert Lea offense continued its early-season struggles as Waseca shut the team out in a 10-0 win.

The Colonels (0-7) tallied just six hits in the game and made 17 of their outs on fly balls, including numerous pop ups.

“Just a frustrating game,” said Albert Lea head coach Bill Trygstad. “We didn’t hit the ball. The outs we made were easy outs.”

Trygstad attributed some of the woes to hitters trying too hard to make something happen at the plate.

“A lot of guys are trying a little too hard right now and when you do that you pop up,” Trygstad said.

The Braves knocked out 10 hits in the game and had a scoring threat in nearly every inning.

“They outplayed us, they deserved it,” Trygstad said. “We play them in a couple weeks again, hopefully we’ll get them then.”

Caleb Srp threw a complete-game shutout and struck out just two hitters in nine innings of work.

After committing six errors Saturday against Wells, the defensive troubles continued against the Braves as the Colonels made five errors and had mental lapses throughout the game.

“We had a few problems out there,” Trygstad said. “They bunted on us quite a bit.”

Chris Glynn went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer in the eighth inning that made the game 9-0.

Waseca was also able manufacture runs on delayed steals of second with runners on third.

The Braves offense had a big inning in the seventh when they pushed three runs across and consistently scored runs. Waseca scored a run in every inning except the second, third and fifth.

The Colonels had one extra base hit and had just five runners move into scoring position.

Albert Lea starter Michael Greibrok lasted four innings and gave up three runs on four hits and struck out two.

The Colonels travel to Mankato Friday to face the Mankato Mets.
