A Wells man died Saturday night apparently as a result of falling into a campfire in Waseca.

The man is 58-year-old Gary Huper, according to the Waseca County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities say he was camping with his fiancé.

The sheriff’s report says the man was found in the campfire pit at Kiesler’s Campground & RV Resort.

Charlene Cukla of Blaine said she and others ran over to help the Huper, and one of them threw a wet towel on him. She says they rolled him over and realized he had died.

Waseca County Chief Deputy Brad Milbrath says no one witnessed the death, so an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause.

It is being treated as “an undetermined death” and is being investigated by the Waseca County Sheriff’s Office and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. The autopsy is scheduled at the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Assisting at the scene were Waseca Police Department, Waseca Fire Department and North Ambulance Service.
