Borderfest helps instill community pride in Emmons

Borderfest kicks off Friday and Saturday in Emmons, and some of the events will be for a good cause.
Some of the proceeds from the pork chop dinner Saturday night will go toward funding Honor Flight, a program that offers World War II veterans a one-day trip to Washington, D.C., to see the memorials. Six past Honor Flight participants will serve as the grand marshals of the Borderfest parade.
The pork chop supper is from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday.
Mark Heggestad, Borderfest chairman, said the plan is to sponsor one Honor Flight participant, but that could change depending on how much money is raised.
Borderfest has been an annual summer event in Emmons for about 10 years.
Heggestad said Borderfest helps instill community pride, and also is a time for family reunions.
“It gives people a chance to get out and see people they haven’t maybe seen all summer long. It’s good to see families get together and watch different events,” Heggestad said.
The Borderfest parade is at 6:30 p.m. Friday, and there are also softball tournaments beginning Friday, continuing through Sunday.
The Johnny Holm Band will play during the street dance starting at 8:30 p.m. Friday.
Events continue Saturday with a kids pedal pull in the Security Bank parking lot at 10 a.m., which will be sponsored by the Winnebago Cooperative Telecom Association. Participants can combine points with other WCTA events.
“It’s just some nice, good entertainment,” Heggestad said.
The mudbog begins at noon and is hosted by the Stateline OHV Club. Registration begins at 9 a.m.
A new addition to Borderfest will be free entertainment Saturday afternoon, as Dunnell Lenort will perform in downtown Emmons from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
“It’s just something new to fill out the day a little bit and generate some more activities to participate in,” Heggestad said.
The car and motorcycle cruise begins at 6: 30 p.m. and will return between 7:30 and 8 p.m.
Then Nate and the Moonlighters play at the street dance at 8:30 p.m.
Mama’s Grille will host a Sunday brunch, and there will be citywide garage sales on Friday and Saturday.
“It brings more people into town. It gives them an opportunity to see what offerings we do have here in town,” Heggestad said.
