The American Red Cross said 40 residences in south Minneapolis received at least some damage in the thunderstorms storms that moved through town Wednesday afternoon.
Red Cross volunteer Tammy Nystuen said the group’s damage assessment teams surveyed the area on Wednesday evening. She didn’t have any data indicating how severely the homes were damaged.
The Red Cross had an emergency response vehicle in the area, which provides water, coffee, food and meets other short-term needs.
Nystuen said the Red Cross is providing more help for two families who were left homeless after the storm. High winds tore the roof off their duplex on 4th Avenue South, leaving it uninhabitable.
There are reports that a tornado hit the area, but the National Weather Service hasn’t determined if it was a tornado or just high winds.
Midwestern residents began to clean up after tornadoes and severe storms slammed several states.
The weather service also is investigating reports of tornadoes in Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana.
