DNR makes the most of Minn. State Fair

Fly-fish Minnesota

Representatives of Midwest Fly Fishing magazine, the St. Paul Fly Tyers, the Federation of Fly Fishers, Trout Unlimited and the Fly Fishing Women of Minnesota will demonstrate various aspects of this popular sport.

DNR fish pond talks

Learn all about the different fish that call Minnesota home during the DNRs fish pond talks. The live fish exhibit is one of the State Fair’s most popular attractions with an estimated 800,000 visitors annually.

Started in 1905, the fair’s first live fish exhibit used aquariums purchased from the 1904 Worlds Fair in St. Louis. This year’s exhibit displays nearly 50 species of fish.

When: Daily at 9:45 a.m., 10:45 a.m., 11:45 a.m., 12:45 p.m., 1:45 p.m., 2:45 p.m., 3:45 p.m.

Where: DNR fish pond, south of DNR Building

Wheel of fish

The Wheel of Fish game is a “Jeopardy’ style contest where the participants are given a chance to answer questions on Minnesota fish, aquatic habitats, regulations, and stewardship. Fun for the whole family.

When: Daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Where: South side of the main DNR building

Music: Standing Room Only (S.R.O)

Standing Room Only (S.R.O.) have been a part of the live music scene for more than two decades.

When: Sunday 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m., 4 p.m., 7 p.m., 8.p.m.

Monday:

Minnesota muskies

Learn all about the Minnesota Muskie in this presentation. The muskellunge is one of the largest and most elusive fish that swims in Minnesota. Expert will talk about catching Muskies in southern Minnesota and the need and benefits of having new lakes, as well as some conservation tips, catch and release practices and benefits.

When: Monday, 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m.

Where: DNR Volunteer Outdoor Stage

Music: Ecuador Manta

Based out of St. Paul, Ecuador Manta has evolved into a sound best described as Latin Fusion, World Music. Their venue includes, world beats from The Caribbean, The Middle East, North America and many countries throughout Latin America.

When: Monday – 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m., 4 p.m., 6-10:30 p.m.
