It is clear that the federal ‘cash for clunkers’ program is a hit. It’s good to read news about cars selling and a stimulus program that people like.

However, many dealerships have put their participation in the program on hold while they wait for Congress to act. Presently, Americans seeking a bargain are waiting on a Senate vote. That vote is expected Friday.

To be honest, Congress appears to be moving faster than it usually does, so it is difficult to urge the politicians to move even faster.

However, what we would like to urge Congress to do, as it extends the program, is attempt to remove some of its glitches, too. There is one in particular we would like to point out:

To submit an application, the car engine must be disabled and sent to the salvage yard. But if the application is rejected, the car owner doesn’t get the car back. Isn’t there a way to disable and crush only the approved clunkers?

Even old clunkers have a dollar value on the local market, and car owners deserve to find that value if the ‘cash for clunkers’ program doesn’t give it to them.
