On Saturday, July 25, women members of the Oak View held the 2nd Annual “Get Your Pink On” Golf For A Cure nine-hole golf outing at Oak View Golf Course in Freeborn, to make a difference in the fight against breast cancer.
The event was organized by chairwomen, Nicole Brown and Brenda Madson, and four other committee members.
The golfing was only done by women and men catered to them at each hole with some sort of specialty. At one of the holes women were served champagne and strawberries. At another hole there was an activity called the “Man Drive,” where each women would pick out a colored golf tee randomly and the tee was a reference to which man would tee off for them.
“This was a nice luxury for us because a majority of us couldn’t get the ball on the green with the very first drive,” said golf outing participant, Jenni Hanna.
The outing ended with a program honoring the five breast cancer survivors in attendance.
A potato bar and a silent auction with items donated by various businesses in the area was also held.
This year 76 women were present compared to last year’s 52, and the amount raised is estimated to be around $7,500 compared to last year’s $3,500. All proceeds were donated to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Minnesota Foundation.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure was founded more than 25 years ago by Susan’s sister, Nancy Brinker, and has evolved into one of the world’s largest networks for breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives.
According to Hanna, the women wanted to do something local to support the fight against breast cancer because of the number of women they know who have been diagnosed with it and survived it. To her, it was a fun way to honor them.
