Karen Sorenson, chairwoman for Greenwings of the Freeborn County Ducks Unlimited, was presented a $500 foundation grant check from Rebecca Gisel, Alliant Energy. Greenwings is the “children’s version” of Ducks Unlimited. Greenwings get kids acquainted with the importance of preserving and protecting Minnesota’s wetlands. The Alliant Energy Foundation is committed to helping to improve the quality of life — now and in the future in the communities where Alliant Energy has a presence. The Foundation supports health and human service programs, education endeavors, civic activities, cultural and arts initiatives and environmental efforts. The money received from Alliant Energy went towards the Greenwing Picnic at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds that was held Saturday, Aug. 15. This education event had 57 kids and parents attend. The day focused on pets with a local vet and pet groomer, provided prizes for the kids and through a drawing gave away a girl and boys bike to two lucky kids ages 5 and under. Three members of the Thunder Hockey Team talked with the kids and provided each a voucher to attend a Thunder Hockey game this season.
