Bulldog return to smash-mouth football delivers win

Sometimes the game plan for the Lake Mills football team can look pretty simple.

Friday was certainly one of those times for the Bulldogs (2-3, 2-1 District 2 Class 1A) as they rode the sturdy legs of running back Jake Brekken to a 16-7 victory over Belmond-Klemme in Belmond.

Brekken set school record for rushing yards in a game with 250 and also scored twice to give Lake Mills its second consecutive victory.

“He carried the load,” said Bulldogs head coach Bill Byrnes. “Thirty-three times is a lot, but that’s the way he’s built.”

Brekken carried 33 times and Lake Mills rolled up 353 yards of total offense against the Broncos.

The defense did its part as well, limiting Belmond-Klemme to 188 yards in the game.

“The kids feel good about the last couple of weeks so hopefully we can get that momentum going,” Byrnes said.

The Bulldogs host West Hancock next Friday for homecoming.
